The Atlantic Threshold route highlights from Gibraltar to the Canary Islands

Leave the enclosed seas of Europe behind and experience the transformative power of the open ocean. Departing Gibraltar right after New Year's, this 730 NM passage propels you through the Strait and out into the vast expanse of the North Atlantic.

Feel the quick Mediterranean chop transform into massive, slow-rolling Atlantic swells. Navigate the bustling Strait currents and the notorious Iberian orca corridor, then lock into the exhilarating trade-wind route down the Moroccan coast. Stand night watches under an unbroken canopy of celestial stars, surf towering deep-blue waves, and behold one of the world's most breathtaking landfalls: the snow-crowned, 3,718-meter volcanic pinnacle of Mount Teide and the black volcanic cliffs of Lanzarote rising sheer from the ocean horizon.

The Route

730 NM Southward North Atlantic Trade-Wind Passage: Gibraltar → Strait Current → Moroccan Coast → Canaries

The sheer cliffs of the Rock of Gibraltar viewed across the bay at sunset 1. The Strait of Gibraltar & Orca Alley: Clearing Europa Point and timing the powerful outflow currents through the Strait. Heightened vigilance through the Iberian orca corridor and heavy commercial shipping lanes into the open ocean.

Sailboat cruising downwind across deep blue rolling Atlantic ocean swells under trade winds 2. The Atlantic Trade-Wind Run: Breaking out into the open ocean as continental Europe fades behind. The motion of the yacht transforms as long, rhythmic Atlantic swells roll in from thousands of miles away. Turning south-southwest along the African coast, we lock into fresh trade winds for fast downwind reaches under poled-out headsail, surfing emerald swells alongside pods of ocean dolphins.

Sailor standing night watch at the helm under the starry Milky Way with bioluminescent ocean wake 3. The Oceanic Night Void: Operating far beyond the reach of coastal light pollution. Standing solitary night watches illuminated solely by bioluminescent bow waves and an astonishing river of stars stretching across the Milky Way.

Sailboat reaching landfall beneath dramatic towering volcanic cliffs and cloud-capped mountains of the Canary Islands 4. Landfall of the Volcanic Citadels: The ultimate offshore landfall. Marvel as the black volcanic cliffs of Lanzarote and the staggering 3,718-meter summit of Mount Teide pierce through low trade-wind cumulus clouds from 60 miles out at sea, guiding us into port.
